Rocket Lab is buying Iridium Communications for $54 per share in a deal that values the satellite operator at $8 billion. The acquisition has not closed yet, but the shape of it is clear: Rocket Lab plans to "build upon" Iridium's existing network and "scale into untapped markets and pioneer new space-based services to the benefit of global customers." In a direct challenge to SpaceX's Starlink.
The deal marks the largest move yet in Rocket Lab's acquisition spree. The company bought space robotics firm Motiv in May, laser communications provider Mynaric in April, a precision component manufacturer in February, and optical sensor defence contractor Geost last year. Each acquisition layered on a piece of what Rocket Lab needs to build a vertically integrated space company that does not just launch rockets but also operates spacecraft and provides services from orbit. Iridium gives it the backbone.
THE NETWORK BEHIND THE PRICE TAG
Iridium operates roughly 80 satellites in low Earth orbit, the same orbit Starlink uses but in a different constellation design. The fleet is fully deployed and already generating revenue from satellite phones, IoT terminals, and aviation connectivity. What Rocket Lab is really buying, though, is the spectrum. Iridium owns a bundle of L-band frequencies that are licensed and internationally coordinated. Spectrum is the hardest asset in satellite communications to replicate. It takes years or decades of regulatory filings and international coordination to open new bands. Buying a company that already has it is the only shortcut.
Rocket Lab said the deal gives it an "immediate foothold" in direct device communications, internet of things networks, and global positioning, navigation and timing services. Those are markets that SpaceX is also pursuing with Starlink's direct-to-cell service and its growing government business. Rocket Lab will likely see benefits for its military satellite contracts, where secure, licensed spectrum is a requirement.
THE CONSOLIDATION RACE
The announcement comes after years of consolidation among space and satellite companies. Viasat acquired Inmarsat. A private equity firm bought Maxar in 2023. Lockheed Martin purchased satellite manufacturer Terran Orbital in 2024. The most direct parallel: in April 2026, Amazon bought satellite company Globalstar for $11.6 billion. Amazon is building its own space-based internet competitor to Starlink with the Leo service, and Globalstar provides the satellite backbone for Apple's emergency SOS feature. The two deals follow the same logic: if you cannot match Starlink's scale by building your own constellation from scratch, you buy an existing one and try to grow it faster than SpaceX can grow its lead.
Iridium's network has not grown much in recent years due to its financial troubles. The company has been generating cash but not expanding its satellite fleet significantly. Rocket Lab's acquisition plan appears to be about injecting capital and launch capacity into that fixed asset. Rocket Lab builds its own rockets, the Electron and the larger Neutron under development. It can launch replacement or expansion satellites at internal cost, a vertical integration edge that Iridium never had as a pure operator.
WHAT BOUT SATELITTE PHONES
Iridium is best known for its satellite phones used by explorers, militaries, and remote workers. It is also the company Qualcomm partnered with to bring satellite texting to Android devices through Snapdragon Satellite, an alternative to Apple's space-based emergency SOS feature. That program was scuttled in 2023. The only mainstream handsets with satellite connectivity today are the Pixel 9 series, which uses a different provider. Rocket Lab has not spelt out consumer handset plans, but the spectrum and network could be redeployed for direct-to-device services that compete with Starlink's direct-to-cell offering.
THE BET ON SCALE
Rocket Lab has been a respected launch provider but a small one relative to SpaceX. This acquisition changes the math. Iridium's operating revenue, its government contracts, and its spectrum assets give Rocket Lab a recurring revenue base that launch alone cannot provide. The company's statement about scaling into untapped markets and pioneering new space-based services is standard deal language, but in this case the industry logic is real. The satellite communications market is consolidating around two or three large players. Starlink has the lead. Amazon is rushing to catch up with Leo. Rocket Lab, with Iridium, plants itself as the third pole.
THE OPEN QUESTIONS
Regulatory hurdles remain. The deal needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission and possibly international regulators. Antitrust concerns could surface given that Rocket Lab would control a significant chunk of L-band spectrum. Iridium's existing customers, including the US Department of Defence, may have concerns about ownership change and service continuity. Rocket Lab will need to demonstrate that it can maintain and improve the network without disruption.
There is also the question of whether $8 billion is the right price for a network that has not grown its satellite count in years. Iridium's stock was not trading near $54 before the announcement, so the premium is significant. Rocket Lab is betting that the combination of its launch capability, its acquisition history, and the rising demand for space-based services will unlock growth that Iridium could not achieve on its own.
WHAT IT MEANS
For the space industry, this is the year the satellite communications map gets redrawn. Amazon's Globalstar deal, now Rocket Lab's Iridium deal, and Starlink's relentless expansion mean that by the end of this decade there will be three large constellations competing for customers. For consumers, the near-term effect is more satellite connectivity options in phones, cars, and IoT devices. For investors, the bet is on whether Rocket Lab can integrate Iridium smoothly while continuing to develop the Neutron rocket and other products. The company has shown it can acquire and absorb small companies. Iridium is a different scale entirely.
