GOOGLE ADDS YOUTUBE MUSIC, INSTACART & CANVA TO AI MODE SEARCH

Starting this week, US users can ask AI Mode to make a playlist, fill a grocery cart, or design a flyer without leaving the search window.

Google is pushing AI Mode further into everyday errands. The company announced on July 16 that it is rolling out support for Connected Apps for three new services: YouTube Music, Instacart, and Canva. US users get access first.

The idea is straightforward. Instead of opening a separate app to make a playlist or start a grocery order, you tell AI Mode what you want and it handles the setup. Google said "...we’re enabling you to connect your apps in Search directly.". The results appear inline in the chat, with buttons to finish each action.

THREE NEW INTEGRATIONS

The first addition is YouTube Music. Users can prompt AI Mode to create a playlist; for example, the AI uses the age to look back to their birth year and blend past and present songs. The response includes an AI-generated title, song count, total duration, and buttons to play the list directly in YouTube Music. During generation, a status message says The playlist itself expires after a while, so Google recommends saving it.

The second service is Instacart. A user can say "get me all the things I need for my BBQ and add them to my grocery cart". AI Mode sifts through the user's Google Account, Gmail, and more to gather details. Since the prompt mentions a grocery cart, the AI routes the result to Instacart. Users then select their preferred store, review items, and open Instacart to complete the purchase.

The third addition is Canva. Users can ask for a specific banner or flyer, providing details such as theme, event date and time. AI Mode generates a draft inside the chat, ready for further editing in Canva.

Google said it is "working with a range of partners" and teased that more partners are coming.

ONE STEP IN A LONGER ROLL

This week's expansion builds on a foundation laid earlier this year. In January, Google launched a feature called Personal Intelligence for Gemini, letting users connect apps like Photos, Gmail, and YouTube. Users could ask Gemini to find dates from an email thread or locate replacement tyres by cross-referencing photos of their car.

That experience reached AI Mode, Gemini, and Chrome in March for more US users. The focus then was Google's own apps. In recent weeks, the Workspace integration added Google Drive and Calendar to AI Mode. The Calendar connection lets the AI tailor plans to a user's existing schedule and insert events directly.

Now the same connectivity is extending to third-party platforms. The difference is that AI Mode lives inside Google Search, offering a chat interface that can act on behalf of the user. It is a move that pushes the search box beyond information retrieval and into task completion.

GOOGLE'S STRATEGY

Google has been cautious in how it connects AI to external services. The pattern so far has been to start with first-party apps (Gmail, Photos, Drive, Calendar), then expand to partners with clear use cases. YouTube Music, Instacart, and Canva all have strong consumer appeal and match common search intents: entertainment, shopping, and design.

The playlist creation is the most friction-free example. A prompt like this saves several steps: opening YouTube Music, navigating to create a playlist, searching songs, and adding them. AI Mode compresses that into a single message. The Instacart integration is more complex, requiring personal data access and store selection, but it demonstrates the system's ability to pull details from across a user's digital life.

Canva is the outlier in some ways — it is a design tool, not a subscription service or content platform. But it speaks to the same goal: let users describe what they need in natural language and have the AI produce a starting point.

Google is also careful to keep the user in control. In each case, the user must verify the results before the action is finalised. The playlist gets a save button, the Instacart order requires store selection and item confirmation, and the Canva flyer opens in the editor for tweaks.
