Roblox is handing its 132 million daily active users the ability to make a game from a phone, with nothing more than a text prompt. The new suite, called Build, rolls out as a public alpha on July 28 and represents the platform's biggest bet yet on AI-generated content. "They know exactly what it would feel like to play. They don’t have the expertise to build it. Today, that changes."

Build is a mobile-first creation tool embedded in the Roblox app for iPhone and iPad. Users aged 9 and older can type a description of a game idea, and AI turns it into a basic, playable experience. That starting point can then be expanded through playtesting and further text commands. The entire pipeline, from creation to publishing on the platform, happens on a mobile device. Previously, making a Roblox game required a Mac or PC running Roblox Studio.

The AI models powering Build are trained on a large corpus of 3D models and gaming data. Some are Roblox's own proprietary models; others come from a broader set of AI frameworks. The result is a system that translates natural language into structured game logic, environments, and interactive elements. Roblox also plans to add new AI tools to the desktop Studio, and content created with Build can be iterated on there as well.

HOW THE ROLLOUT WILL WORK

Build launches as a public alpha on July 28, but not everyone gets the full feature set right away. Publishing games created with Build will initially be limited to select users in New Zealand. Roblox will expand the rollout to other regions over the following months as it refines the experience. Age restrictions are layered: users must be 9 or older to use Build, but games published with Build can only be played by users 16 and older. That is a deliberate gate to control what content reaches the platform's youngest audience.

Roblox is offering a free base tier of Build, with paid options for power users who want more features. The company hasn't detailed pricing yet, but the freemium model mirrors how it treats developer tools and in-app purchases.

THE SLOP PROBLEM

Any platform that opens AI-generated content at scale has to answer the same question: what stops the feed from filling with low-effort, broken, or harmful experiences? Roblox says its discovery systems will filter out by design. The company has not described the specific filtering mechanism, but it will need to work aggressively. The platform already hosts millions of user-generated games, and the volume will likely surge once creation requires nothing more than a few lines of text.

The challenge is not new. Roblox already polices its catalogue for inappropriate content. Still, AI-generated material introduces novel failure modes: games that generate off-platform links, games that produce unintended interactive behaviour, games that copy copyrighted assets. The age restriction on published Build games (16+) suggests Roblox is treating AI-created content as higher risk, at least until the moderation systems catch up.

FROM CREATOR ECONOMY TO EVERYONE ECONOMY

Roblox's existing creator economy is driven by a relatively small number of studios and individual developers who invest months in building experiences like Brookhaven RP, Adopt Me, and Dress to Impress. Those games drive huge engagement and revenue. Build does not replace that workflow. It offers a lower ceiling for people who would never open Studio in the first place. said founder and CEO David Baszucki. "For 20 years, Roblox has been on a mission to remove limits on what gaming is – and what it can be"

What that means in practice is a two-tier platform: professional or semi-professional creators using Studio, and casual creators using Build to make disposable experiences. The hope is that some casual creators graduate to Studio and eventually produce the next Adopt Me. The risk is that the platform's discovery surface becomes dominated by AI-generated junk that crowds out human-made work.

THE BUSINESS LOGIC

Roblox has 132 million daily active users and needs to keep them engaged and spending. Build gives every user a reason to open the app beyond just playing games. Creation is a retention mechanic. It also feeds Roblox's developer exchange economy, where creators earn Robux that Roblox takes a cut from. If Build users spend Robux on paid tiers or in-game items for their AI-generated games, the platform captures additional revenue without needing to produce its own content.

Roblox has been investing heavily in infrastructure and AI research. Build is the most visible product of that investment. It also arrives as competitors like Epic's Unreal Editor for Fortnite and Meta's Horizon Worlds push their own creation tools. Roblox's advantage is scale: no other platform has 132 million mobile users who already understand the basic loop of playing and building in a single app.

"THE WORLD NEEDS MORE PLAY"

The first question is how quickly the New Zealand alpha reveals moderation gaps. The second is whether Build-generated games actually get played, or whether they sit in the catalogue unvisited. Discovery systems are hard to tune for a flood of new content. If the filtering works, Build is a genuine democratisation of game creation. If it doesn't, the platform gets harder to navigate for everyone.

Roblox is framing Build as the next step in its mission. Baszucki said. "We're doing this for one reason: The world needs more play" Whether the world needs more AI-generated play is a question the alpha will start answering in July.
