APPLE'S FOLDABLE WILL BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO GET YOUR HANDS ON!

Only up to one million units of the $2,500 iPhone Ultra will ship before October, and analysts expect scalpers to double the price.

apple's foldable iphone will be nearly impossible to buy this year

Don't plan on getting Apple's first foldable phone in September. The iPhone Ultra, expected to be the company's first foldable, will ship roughly 0.5 to 1 million units in the third quarter of this year. For comparison, Apple will likely ship 20 to 22 million iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units in the same period. The math is simple: almost nobody who wants one will get one before the holidays.

Ming-Chi Kuo, the analyst with a strong track record on Apple supply chain forecasts, said, "My latest industry survey indicates that assembly shipments for the foldable iPhone in 2H26 will be roughly 7–8 million units, with 3Q26 shipments at 0.5–1 million units, or about 10% of the total. By comparison, estimated 3Q26 shipments of the iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max total roughly 20–22 million units, significantly higher than the foldable iPhone and already meeting the inventory requirement for an official launch. That means the foldable iPhone will account for barely one-tenth of the Pro's volume at launch. Against that kind of inventory, a typical September unveiling becomes a technicality. The phone will be announced, but it won't be orderable until at least October, and maybe later.

WHAT'S SO ULTRA ABOUT IT

The device itself is real, at least in rumour-supply chain. The iPhone Ultra will unfold to a 7.8-inch main display (other sources say 7.76 inches) that roughly matches the iPad mini's footprint. The cover display will be 5.5 inches. At under a millimetre thick when open, it will be thinner than the iPhone Air. It should pack Apple's A20 Pro chip, 12GB of RAM, and a 5,500mAh battery. The asking price will land between $2,300 and $2,500 in the U.S.

Those are flagship specifications and flagship-plus pricing. The device is clearly positioned as a luxury halo product, not a volume play. But Apple's own production numbers suggest they are not even trying for volume this year. Assembly shipments for the foldable iPhone in the second half of 2026 will total roughly 7 to 8 million units. That is the entire year's supply. By the time the iPhone 18 Pro family reaches the same milestone, it will already have shipped two to three times that many.

IPHONE X ALL OVER AGAIN

Kuo explicitly compared the launch to the iPhone X, which was announced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. The iPhone 8 was available to pre-order three days later. The iPhone X was not. Its pre-orders opened six weeks after the event, on October 27. The foldable iPhone appears to follow the same playbook: a joint September unveiling with the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, but no pre-orders until the fourth quarter, likely October or later.

The parallel makes sense. The iPhone X introduced a radical design change (edge-to-edge OLED, Face ID, no home button). The foldable iPhone requires Apple to master a new form factor and ensure the display hinge survives real-world use. Manufacturing challenges have limited early production, and Kuo estimates delivery times could be "4-6 weeks or longer" after pre-orders open. Some buyers may not receive their units until November or December.

SCALPER MATH

When supply is this tight and demand is this high, the secondary market becomes a blood sport. Kuo predicts that iPhone Ultras could be resold for a 50 per cent premium above retail price. That means a $2,500 phone could cost $5,000 on eBay within hours of pre-orders going live. There is no reason to doubt that forecast. The same dynamic played out with the iPhone X, the Nintendo Switch, and every high-demand hardware launch of the last decade. The only variable is the multiple.

If you want a foldable iPhone, the only realistic path is to pre-order as close to the opening second as possible. Walking into a store and buying one off the shelf in the first month is practically impossible. Apple is building only up to 1 million units for the entire third quarter. Even if every single one of those goes to retail (some will go to carrier and channel partners), that is roughly one phone for every 330 Americans. The odds are not in your favour.

WHEN WILL THE SHORTAGE EASE

The launch buzz and supply constraints should fade by the first quarter of 2027, according to Kuo. By then, Apple will have had several months to increase production yields and build inventory. The total 2026 production target (Apple increased it to around 10 million units, per one report) means the initial wave is merely the beginning. But the foldable iPhone market is also evolving. Samsung, Google, and Motorola all have mature foldable lines with iterative generations. Apple's debut is coming late, with higher prices and famously thin margins at these volumes. The scarcity might be partially intentional: a limited launch creates the perception of a must-have product and buys Apple time to fix hinge or display issues without a full-scale recall.

That said, if you absolutely need to be the first person in your circle with a foldable iPhone, pre-order the second the link goes live. Set alarms. Have your Apple account loaded. And be prepared to wait four to six weeks, or longer. The phone will not be easy to buy, and that is exactly how Apple wants it.
