WATCHOS 27 BETA IS HERE, BRINGS SIRI AI AND MUCH MORE

Apple dropped iOS and iPadOS beta 2 yesterday but left the Watch hanging. The watchOS build is here now, with some notable gaps.

watchOS 27 developer beta 2 is live as of June 25, a day after Apple seeded the second beta for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and the rest of its operating systems. The delay was brief but conspicuous: developers and testers on the Watch got a message yesterday that the build was not ready, while everyone else kicked the tyres on new features. Now the lineup is complete.

HEY APPLE, WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG!

Apple does not typically explain one-day gaps between beta drops, but the timing suggests something in the Watch build needed an extra validation cycle. The first watchOS 27 beta shipped over two weeks ago, and beta 2 is the first substantive update since. A one-day slip is not a crisis, but it is unusual for a company that prides itself on synchronised releases across devices.

The bigger question is what was fixed or added that could not wait another day. The answer appears to be a mix of feature additions and hardware-specific tuning. The build is available now through the Watch app on any iPhone with a free developer account, though the usual installation caveats apply: the Watch must be on its charger, connected to Wi-Fi, and have a battery level of at least 50 per cent.

WHAT'S IN THE BUILD

watchOS 27 is the largest feature update to the Watch in several years, and beta 2 delivers most of what was promised. The headliner is Siri AI, a version of Siri that can hold back-and-forth conversations, draw on general world knowledge, and access personal data to answer questions. It is a meaningful upgrade from the single-turn query model that has defined Siri on the Watch since launch.

There is a catch. Siri AI on Apple Watch requires an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, which means at minimum an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Anyone running an older phone gets the old Siri. That hardware gate ties the Watch upgrade directly to the phone upgrade, a move that will frustrate some users but is consistent with Apple's approach to on-device machine learning features.

The update also introduces a Dynamic app grid that surfaces Siri-suggested apps, replacing the static grid with something that adapts based on context. Smart Stack Suggestions get more intuitive rules for surfacing relevant widgets. The new all-in-one Find My app supports Precision Finding, letting you locate your phone, tags, and other items more precisely than before. Users can find their parked car, see pinned messages, get noise alerts, and view identity and transit cards directly on the Watch.

Workout Buddy gets an offline mode that works without an iPhone nearby, and adds new metrics including progressive increases to distance, pace, or duration. That is a useful addition for runners who leave the phone at home and want more structured workouts.

THE ULTRA 3 OMISSION

Not every Watch gets beta 2. The Apple Watch Ultra 3 was singled out as missing from the beta rollout that came earlier this week. It is not clear whether the Ultra 3 faces a separate build due to its larger display, additional buttons, or different modem, but the omission is notable for a device that launched less than a year ago. Apple may be holding back a specialised build for the Ultra line, or there could be a bug that affects the titanium model specifically. Either way, beta 2 is not available for Ultra 3 owners who want to test.

The rest of the Watch lineup, including the standard Series and SE models, should see the update without issue. If you own an Ultra 3, you will need to wait for a subsequent beta drop that includes the device.

POLISHED INTERFACE

Beyond the headline features, watchOS 27 beta 2 brings refinements. Liquid Glass, the translucent UI element used on the face and in menus, has been updated to improve legibility. On a small screen, legibility matters more than visual flair, and the tweak suggests Apple is paying attention to real-world use cases rather than just marketing renders.

Performance optimisations in this build improve battery life across the board. The first beta was rough on battery for many testers, and beta 2 appears to correct that. The specific optimisations are not enumerated in the release notes, but any improvement is welcome on a device that already struggles to last a full day of heavy use.

INSTALLATION AND COMPATIBILITY

To install the beta, open the Watch app on your iPhone, navigate to General, then Software Update, and select the developer beta channel. A free Apple Developer account is required. The Watch must be on the charger, connected to Wi-Fi, and above 50 per cent battery. The update process takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes depending on the model and internet speed.

If you are running iOS 27 beta 2 on your phone, watchOS 27 beta 2 is the natural companion. They share the Siri AI dependency, the Find My integration, and the Smart Stack features. Running one beta without the other will leave some features broken or unavailable.

VERDICT ON THE BETA

One day late is not a disaster.

The watchOS 27 beta 2 delivers the core of the update: a smarter Siri that works on the Watch (if you have the right phone), a more adaptive app grid, offline workouts, and a unified Find My experience. The Ultra 3 gap is frustrating but likely temporary. Developers and serious testers should install. Casual users should wait for the public beta or the final release, because first-party betas on the Watch carry real risk: if beta 2 bricks your device, there is no bootloader recovery like on the iPhone.

For now, the Watch lineup is back in sync. The next beta will tell us whether Apple can hold the cadence or whether more delays await.
