AMAZON'S LEO SATELLITE INTERNET TO LAUNCH LATER THIS YEAR

With 394 satellites in orbit, Amazon says it has enough capacity to begin offering broadband internet service later this year.

Amazon says it has launched enough Leo satellites to begin offering internet service later this year. The company's latest mission, a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket carrying 29 satellites, pushed the constellation to 394 units in orbit. According to Chris Weber, there is still work to do raising the satellites to their final operating altitudes, but the fleet is now dense enough to start serving customers.

Coverage will begin near the Earth's north and south poles and gradually expand toward the equator. That strategy makes sense for a constellation in its early build phase: polar orbits overlap frequently, so a smaller number of satellites can maintain continuous coverage at higher latitudes before the midsection fills in.

ENOUGH OF A START

Amazon Leo aims to eventually deploy more than 3,200 satellites for global broadband coverage. At 394, the constellation is about twelve per cent of the way there. But initial service does not require the entire mesh. Chris Weber said the constellation has "to support continuous service across initial latitudes" and confirmed the company has completed "enough launches for initial service this year". The tone is careful, but the message is clear: this is no longer a paper project.

Amazon has been building the Leo network for years, lagging well behind SpaceX's Starlink. Starlink already operates roughly 10,000 satellites and is the largest constellation by a wide margin. Amazon is not trying to match that number before going live. Instead, it is taking the pragmatic approach of starting with regional coverage and scaling up.

THREE RECEIVERS

Amazon will offer three different user terminals for Leo, each tuned to a different market segment. The Nano receiver measures 7 inches by 7 inches and supports download speeds up to 100 Mbps. The Pro is 11 inches square and delivers up to 400 Mbps. The Ultra, at 20 by 30 inches, pushes the ceiling to 1 Gbps.

The product lineup signals a familiar three-tier strategy: a small, cheap terminal for households, a mid-range unit for power users, and a large antenna for enterprise and industrial customers. Low Earth orbit constellations significantly reduce latency and improve speeds compared to traditional geostationary satellite internet, so Amazon is betting that Leo can sell to customers who would never have considered satellite broadband before.

PLAYING CATCH UP TO STARLINK

SpaceX's head start is enormous. Starlink has been operational for years, with a constellation roughly 25 times the size of Leo. Amazon is entering a market Starlink effectively defined, and the competitive pressure will force Leo to differentiate.

Amazon has signalled interest in selling to airlines and governments. Whether Leo can undercut Starlink on price or outmanoeuvre it on coverage will depend on the terminal cost and the number of launches Amazon can sustain in the next two years.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR AMAZON

Amazon plans to make Leo generally available before the end of 2026. The pace of launches will need to accelerate. Each launch puts about two dozen units in orbit.

The polar-first rollout buys time. Initial customers in high-latitude regions will get service this year while Amazon builds out the equatorial band.

Amazon is not going to catch Starlink on raw satellite count anytime soon. But it does not have to. It just needs enough coverage to keep a user terminal connected, and the first 394 satellites get it across that line. The real test will be whether the service is competitive on speed, latency, and price once the user terminals start shipping. That answer is still months away, but the orbit is no longer empty.
