OpenAI hires Apple Vision Pro chief Paul Meade for hardware unit

OpenAI has hired Paul Meade, the Apple vice president who ran the Vision Pro hardware team and led the company's smart glasses initiative. Meade will leave Apple next week and join OpenAI's hardware unit to work on its upcoming family of AI-powered devices.

The move is the strongest signal yet that OpenAI's hardware ambitions, operating under Jony Ive's io subsidiary, are moving from concept toward reality. Meade is not a designer or a strategist. He is an operational hardware leader who spent seven years shipping one of the most complex consumer electronics devices ever made.

WHY MEADE LEFT

Meade's departure was not a spontaneous defection. An internal restructuring at Apple triggered it. When John Ternus was named Apple's next CEO, Johny Srouji took over as chief hardware officer and immediately initiated a shake-up of the hardware engineering unit. Some vice presidents were reassigned, and some executives felt demoted.

Under the new structure, Meade and other hardware leaders now report to Tom Marieb, the new vice president of hardware engineering, rather than directly to Srouji. The shift pushed Meade down a level, a clear blow to a 15-year veteran who had risen from iPad manager to lead the entire Vision Products Group. The restructuring has upset several hardware executives. For Meade, being placed in an organisation where his path to the top was blocked made the decision to leave straightforward.

WHAT APPLE LOSES

Meade joined Apple in 2010, working as a key iPad manager before becoming head of iPhone program management in 2012. He joined the Vision Products Group in 2017 and took over all hardware engineering in 2019. He knows Apple's scale, its supply chain, and its manufacturing rhythms intimately.

The loss is particularly acute because it comes at a fragile moment for Apple's non-iPhone hardware ambitions. The company's smart glasses initiative, expected to launch in late 2027, was the next product under Meade's leadership. With his departure, responsibility falls to Fletcher Rothkopf, his longtime deputy and the head of product design for the Vision Pro and smart glasses. Rothkopf inherits a roadmap that is still years from market, now with the added friction of a leadership transition.

WHAT OPENAI GAINS

OpenAI's io subsidiary, formed alongside Jony Ive and LoveFrom designers, now has a hardware veteran who has actually run a major product line. Meade joins a team that already includes Ive, Tang Tan, and Evans Hankey, who led Apple's design for three years after Ive left. What was missing was the operational engineering layer. Meade fills that gap.

He understands the relationship between industrial design, hardware engineering, and supply chain logistics. Ive and LoveFrom bring world-class design sensibilities, but shipping a consumer hardware device in 2026 or 2027 requires operational rigour that design firms rarely possess. Meade provides that rigour.

The product itself is still under wraps, but the team composition gives strong hints. Ive designs objects. Tang Tan and Evans Hankey understand product fit and finish. Meade knows how to build spatial computers and displays. Whether the market wants a new device category is a separate question, but the capability to build one has just increased dramatically.

DOES THIS MEAN OPENAI SMARTGLASSES? UMMM NOT YET.

This is the clearest example yet of a pattern that has been building for months. OpenAI is systematically recruiting from Apple's design and hardware ranks. The io project now looks less like a skunkworks experiment and more like a well-funded startup with a world-class engineering core.

For Apple, the cost of the Srouji restructuring is now measurable. Losing a veteran of Meade's caliber creates a gap in the Vision Products Group that will take time to close. The company still has immense hardware depth, but its most challenging future product category, smart glasses, has lost its day-to-day leader right as the project was supposed to be ramping toward a 2027 launch.
