The $499 student pricing lasted about a semester; now the Neo starts at $699, and the competition looks better.

Apple raised prices across its product lines on Thursday, hitting the iPad, Mac, Apple TV, HomePod, and VisionPro. Only the iPhone and Apple Watch were spared. The move is broad, but the most telling increase is on the MacBook Neo, Apple's attempt at a budget laptop.

The Neo launched at a $499 price point for students three and a half months ago, a move that felt like Apple finally acknowledging the sub‑$500 laptop market. That window is now closed. The base model starts at $699, $100 more than before. The student price jumped to $599. The step‑up model with Touch ID and double the storage also went up by $100, to $799, or $699 with the education discount. Amazon still has the older pricing at $590 and $690, respectively, but that won't last.

THE SHORT-LIVED HYPE

The $499 Neo student pricing was clearly a temporary deal. Apple offered it as a student price, but the math always seemed too good to last. A MacBook for under $500 was Apple's way of saying it could compete with Chromebooks and budget Windows machines. The price hike after three and a half months confirms that the promotion was a time‑limited offer, not a permanent shift in strategy.

Three and a half months is roughly one semester. Apple essentially gave students a semester deal, then pulled it. At $699, the Neo is still cheaper than a MacBook Air, but it sits in a crowded space where Lenovo, Dell, and Asus offer Intel or AMD laptops with 16GB of RAM and larger SSDs for the same or less money. The $499 student pricing lasted about as long as a semester, and now the value proposition is significantly weaker.

RAMAGEDDON EXPLAINS, BUT DOES NOT EXCUSE

Apple and other computer‑makers point to the surge in demand for memory and storage from AI data centres, sometimes called RAMageddon, as the reason for rising component prices. Server farms building out AI infrastructure consume enormous amounts of DRAM and NAND flash, and that demand ripples through the consumer supply chain. The cost pass‑through to laptops is inevitable.

But the MacBook Neo's base configuration is hardly memory‑rich. 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD are entry‑level even by 2024 standards. The step‑up model adds no extra RAM, only a larger 512GB SSD, and costs $100 more. The component price argument holds more weight at higher specs, where Apple actually uses more memory. On the Neo, the $100 increase is a significant jump for a machine with only 8GB of RAM.

THE COMPETITION GETS SHARPER

At $699, the MacBook Neo faces a different set of alternatives than it did at $499. Budget Windows 11 laptops now represent a better buy. A $699 Windows machine from Lenovo or Acer often comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD, both of which are major improvements over the Neo's base specs. The trade‑off is macOS versus Windows, build quality versus expandability, but the value calculus has shifted decisively.

The price rises make the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air much harder to justify. Apple's own higher‑end laptops also got price increases, but the impact is most acute on the budget models, where every dollar matters to the buyer. For a student on a tight budget, the $599 education price still hurts compared to the $499 they could have paid just weeks ago. And for anyone not qualified for the education discount, the $699 retail price offers little reason to pick the Neo over a more capable Windows laptop.

A BROADER PRICE RESET

The Thursday price changes go beyond laptops. The iPad, Mac, Apple TV, HomePod, and VisionPro all saw increases. This is not a single product adjustment; it is a portfolio‑wide repricing. Apple is essentially passing on higher component and possibly tariff costs to its entire ecosystem, except for its two flagship product lines. The iPhone and Apple Watch were spared, likely because they either have more pricing power or already carry margins that can absorb the shock.

What the numbers don't show is how long these prices will hold. If RAMageddon eases later this year, Apple could adjust back down, or keep the new prices and pocket the margin. The consumer electronics industry rarely reverses price increases once they stick. The most likely scenario is that the $699 Neo becomes the new normal, and the $499 era becomes a memory.

For now, anyone shopping the budget end of Apple's lineup should check Amazon and other retailers before Apple's new pricing propagates fully. At $590, the Neo is still a reasonable deal. At $699, it is harder to recommend over a well‑specced Windows 11 laptop with double the RAM and storage. The $499 student pricing lasted about as long as a semester, and the lesson is clear: Apple's budget offers are temporary. Buy now or wait for the next flash sale that may never come.
