Apple's smallest iPad is about to get the display it has deserved for years, and customers will pay for it. The iPad Mini could get an OLED upgrade as soon as October, according to Bloomberg, marking the most significant refresh for the device since its 2021 redesign. The switch from LCD to OLED means deeper blacks, better contrast, and more power efficiency. It also means a higher price tag.

The OLED iPad Mini has been in rumour circulation for months, and the timeline has hardened around an October launch, with a device code-named J510 nearing readiness. The upgrade is expected to be the main event of a fall hardware cycle that also includes updates to the iPad Air and the base model next year. But for Mini loyalists, the OLED panel is the headline.

THE BIG OLED LEAP

The current Mini uses an 8.3-inch display that is perfectly fine for most people but dates back to a design era when tablets still shipped with thick bezels and home buttons. The OLED upgrade would make the Mini a genuinely small powerhouse.

There is one catch: the OLED panel will likely be a fixed 60Hz refresh rate rather than the 120Hz ProMotion Apple reserves for its Pro models. That is a letdown for anyone who has scrolled on an iPad Pro and felt the difference. But it also keeps costs down and maintains the Mini's position as the step-up from the base iPad without cannibalising the Pro.

THE BIGGER WORRY IS COST

The current iPad Mini now starts at $599, up from $499 before Apple rolled out sweeping price increases across its product lineup last month. Tim Cook said those hikes were in response to the ongoing RAM shortage, which he warned could last for years. Adding OLED on top of that means the next Mini will almost certainly cost more than its predecessor.

To put that in perspective, Apple recently added the refurbished iPad Mini (A17 Pro) to its U.S. and Canadian stores for the first time since the device launched in October 2024. The refurbished Wi-Fi model with 128GB goes for $509. That is $10 more than a brand-new Mini cost just a few weeks before the price hike. The new equivalent costs $599. So even the refurbished unit is now priced above what a new device used to sell for, and a new OLED model will sit higher still.

Apple promises that refurbished units undergo a "thorough cleaning process and inspection" and come with a new battery, outer shell, all accessories, and the standard one-year warranty. AppleCare+ is available. But the price reality is stark: a customer buying a refurbished Mini today pays more than a new buyer did in early 2025. That is the state of play.

REFURBISHED REALITY CHECK

For anyone unwilling to wait for OLED, the refurbished Mini is a solid deal on its own. It has the A17 Pro chip, an 8.3-inch display, a 12-megapixel Centreter Stage camera, and a Touch ID power button. It ships with a 20W USB-C power adapter and cable. And it is $90 off the new retail price. But the historical context stings: just a few weeks ago, you could have bought a brand-new Mini for $499. Now a refurbished one costs $509.

The refurbished availability is limited to the U.S. and Canada for now, with no word on other countries. If the OLED Mini lands in October, the refurbished model will be a generation old almost immediately. That might not matter much to someone who wants a small iPad at a discount, but it is a reminder that the Mini landscape is about to change.

THE FULL IPAD ROADMAP

The Mini is not Apple's only display project. The iPad Air is also in line for an eventual OLED upgrade, according to Mark Gurman, who described the plan as an "eventual OLED upgrade for the iPad Air". That could arrive next year. The base iPad, meanwhile, is getting a relatively minor refresh early next year (code-named J581), with a faster processor but no major design changes. Apple is not working on a base iPad with OLED, sticking to cheaper LCD for the foreseeable future.

iPad Pro and Apple Pencil updates could also come this spring. The broader picture: Apple is methodically moving its tablet lineup away from LCD, and the Mini is the next domino. That is great for display quality and less great for wallets.

WHAT TO WATCH

Two things matter between now and October. First, whether the OLED Mini actually shipped: the rumoured timeframes can shift, and Apple has missed fall windows before. Second, what the final pricing is. If Apple manages to keep the increase modest (say $50 to $100 over the current $599), the upgrade will be a no-brainer for anyone still rocking an older Mini. If it jumps to $699 or more, it starts to price against the iPad Air and even the base iPad Pro, which would be a tougher sell.
