Apple skips M6 Pro and Max, jumps straight to AI-focused M7 lineup

Apple is not going to release Pro or Max versions of its upcoming M6 chip.

Instead, the company is reserving those higher-performance configurations for the M7 generation, which is being designed primarily around on-device artificial intelligence processing. If the plan holds, the M6 will be the first Apple processor since 2020 to ship as a base-only part.

The baseline M6 is still a meaningful step up from the M5. It will have up to 12 graphics cores, up from 10 on the base M5, and memory bandwidth will climb to 200 gigabytes per second from 153 GBps. The chip also gets an updated memory architecture, an upgraded neural engine, and enhancements for video encoding and decoding. Apple has been testing the M6 internally and aims to ship it inside an entry-level MacBook Pro later this year. The chip is intended to handle concurrent rendering demands from AI, graphics, and other workloads.

But the real story is what happens after that launch. Apple plans to move immediately to the M7 family, with the base M7 arriving "as early as the first half of next year" and the M7 Pro and M7 Max following in late 2027. An M7 Ultra is scheduled for 2028.

WHY THE SKIP

The decision is a departure from the rhythm Apple has held since the M1 family debuted in 2020. Every generation since then has offered at least a Pro and often a Max or Ultra variant. The M5 Pro and Max chips arrived earlier this year alongside the base M5. The M3 generation still had an Ultra. The M6 is the first generation to break that pattern.

The explanation appears to be timing and focus. Rather than stretch a single chip design into three or four SKUs that would then be superseded within a year, Apple is putting its high-end engineering effort into a generation that is purpose-built for the AI era. The M7 line is described as "The M7 line is designed primarily around major advancements to on-device AI processing". That means a new memory architecture, a dramatically wider memory interface (240 GBps on the base M7, up from 200 on the M6), and presumably a GPU and neural engine scaled for large language model inference directly on the device.

The move also aligns with the emphasis Apple placed on AI and Siri during the WWDC keynote this year. If on-device AI is the company's next major product differentiator, it makes sense to concentrate the highest-performance silicon in the generation that can deliver on that promise.

WHAT THE M6 BRINGS

For buyers who only need a base configuration, the M6 is a solid update. The 200 GBps memory bandwidth is a 30 per cent improvement over the M5. The chip also gets an updated neural engine and better video encoding and decoding blocks, which will benefit creative professionals and anyone running local AI models.

A touchscreen MacBook Pro has also been rumoured for the M6 generation, though no details have been confirmed.

WHAT ABOUT THE M5 ULTRA

Apple has not abandoned the high end entirely this year. The M5 Ultra is still in development and is expected to launch as early as this year inside a refreshed Mac Studio. That chip is said to have around 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores, with Apple testing support for up to 768 gigabytes of memory. Those specifications would make it one of the most powerful chips available in a mainstream computer. But the M5 Ultra is essentially a capstone for the M5 line, not a bridge to a larger M6 family.

M7 ROADMAP

The base M7 will start with 240 GBps of memory bandwidth, already a major jump. The M7 Pro and M7 Max are expected in late 2027, and the M7 Ultra is targeted for 2028. That means the Pro/Max variants will have skipped a full generation. A buyer who wanted a high-end MacBook Pro in late 2025 would have the M5 Pro or Max. In late 2026, they would only have the base M6. By late 2027, they could get the M7 Pro or Max.

That is an unusual gap for Apple, but it mirrors a broader industry shift: the pace of improvement in AI accelerators is outpacing general-purpose CPU gains, and chip designers are increasingly willing to skip a generation on the latter to concentrate resources on the former.

MUCH BETTER EXPERIENCE FOR USERS, AT A COST

If you are shopping for a high-end MacBook Pro this year, you have the M5 Pro and M5 Max, which are solid chips but will be a generation behind the AI-focused architecture coming in 2027. If you can wait, the M7 Pro or Max will likely offer much better on-device AI performance than anything Apple ships this year or next.

For the vast majority of Mac users who buy base models, the M6 will be a fine chip with real improvements in GPU, memory bandwidth, and neural engine. The pain point is for professionals who have historically reached for Pro or Max chips and now face a sixteen-month window where the only high-end Apple silicon available is the M5 generation or the M7 Pro/Max in late 2027.

Apple has not said whether the M6 will appear in any other Macs beyond the entry-level MacBook Pro. But the M6 is clearly a placeholder generation, designed to buy Apple the time it needs to build an M7 line that is architecturally focused on the AI workloads the company has staked its future on.
