CUSTOM EQ ON AIRPODS, WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE.

A 3-band equalizer with live preview arrives on AirPods Max 2, Pro 3, and AirPods 4 with iOS 27, marking the first time users can tune their sound profile.

Apple finally adds custom EQ to AirPods, nearly a decade after launch

Apple is giving AirPods users something they have been asking for since the product debuted in December 2016: the ability to tune how their music sounds.

The company announced at WWDC 2026 that AirPods Max 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods 4 will gain a custom equalizer feature, delivering a 3-band EQ with low, mid, and high frequency adjustments. The feature includes a live waveform that shows audio changes in real time as users drag the frequency curve, and allows toggling between the custom setting and Apple's default profile. It arrives with the iOS 27 update.

The timing is notable, Apple designed AirPods to use Adaptive EQ, which automatically adjusts frequencies based on earbud fit and the shape of the user's ear. The company has long marketed this as a feature that optimizes sound without user intervention. the company stated in its announcement. That "if" is doing significant work. For nearly a decade, the answer was effectively no.

THE LONG AWAITED FEATURE

The custom EQ interface presents a frequency graph with an adjustable blue line that users manipulate to change the sound signature. A sample track plays while making adjustments so users can hear the difference immediately. There is a Reset button to return to the default tuning, and users can switch back and forth between custom and default profiles at any time.

The feature is limited to AirPods powered by Apple's H2 chip. The original AirPods Max is also excluded, which makes sense given that Apple typically reserves major software features for newer hardware. It remains unclear whether Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 will get custom EQ settings.

IS IT TOO LATE THOUGH?

Is Apple late to the party as always? Most premium earbuds and headphones from competitors have offered equalizer controls in their companion apps for years. Sony's WH-1000XM6 over-ear headphones feature a 10-band equalizer, giving users far more granular control than Apple's three-band offering. Bose resisted adding custom equalizer settings for many years before introducing them in 2020 via a firmware update to the Noise Canceling Headphones 700.

Previously, the only way to modify AirPods sound was through accessibility tools designed for hearing-impaired users, which was not the same as offering an EQ for personal taste tuning. Apple Music has an EQ feature, but it only affects audio played through Apple Music itself, does not work with other apps, and does not preserve settings when switching between devices. The new custom EQ works system-wide across all apps.

One notable gap: the interface appears to lack a clear option to save presets. Users who want to switch between a bass-heavy profile for workouts and a flatter profile for podcasts would need to manually adjust each time, unless Apple adds preset functionality in a later update.

FITNESS+ INTEGRATION

AirPods Pro 3 brings a separate fitness-focused feature: GymKit integration. Users can sync workouts with compatible gym equipment by pairing their iPhone with treadmills, ellipticals, indoor bikes, and stair steppers from manufacturers including Johnson, Life Fitness, Precor, Schwinn, Technogym, and Woodway. The AirPods Pro 3 can sync heart rate data through iPhone during the workout.

This positions the Pro 3 more explicitly as a fitness companion, a market Apple has increasingly targeted with the AirPods line.

WHY ITS A BIG DEAL.

The absence of custom EQ was one of the most consistent criticisms of AirPods, particularly as competitors offered increasingly sophisticated audio tuning. It was also somewhat anomalous. Apple positions AirPods as premium products, and premium audio gear in 2026 almost universally includes some form of user-accessible equalization. The fact that AirPods lacked this basic feature became harder to justify as the product line matured.

The 3-band EQ is a conservative implementation compared to what Sony and others offer. Apple is not trying to compete on granularity. Rather, it is offering the minimum viable customization for users who want some control without overwhelming them with options. Whether that approach resonates with the audience that actually wants to tweak their sound profile remains to be seen. Users who want 10-band precision will still reach for third-party apps or competing hardware.

What the feature does accomplish is removing one of the most obvious objections to AirPods from the table. For a product line that sells tens of millions of units annually, even a modest EQ is a meaningful addition.
