NOTHING TEASES PHONE(4B) AS A BUDGET FOLLOW UP AFTER KILLING CMF

Nothing is teasing a new smartphone, and all signs point to a budget-friendly addition to the lineup. The company posted a video on X titled that ends with a set of sketching pencils, with the 4B pencil highlighted. The sketch of the phone itself shows a transparent rear panel with exposed internal detailing and a single rear camera, classic Nothing design language at a lower price point.

The teaser, shared by Nothing India, has been followed by a microsite on Flipkart that further promotes the "(b)" branding. It strongly suggests the device will be called the Nothing Phone (4b), sitting below the existing Phone (4a) and Phone (4a) Pro in the lineup.

THE MEMORY ISSUE

The timing is not coincidental. Nothing recently confirmed it had cancelled plans for a successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro. Co-founder Akis Evangelidis said that launching a CMF Phone 2 Pro with its current specifications today would push its price to around Rs. 30,000-35,000 (roughly $317-$370). That is far above the segment the brand targets with its CMF sub-label.

Rising memory and RAM prices were cited as the reason. The CMF brand was supposed to hit a specific price point, and when component costs made that impossible, Nothing decided to kill the project rather than sell a compromised product or a "too-expensive" one. But the company stressed that new smartphones were still on the way.

Leaker Yogesh Brar then claimed that existing CMF phone projects had been shifted to the main Nothing brand. If that is true, the newly teased Phone (4b) could be one of those former CMF projects reborn under the Nothing name. A lower-cost Nothing Phone 4b would make sense as a replacement for a device that may have originally been intended to launch under the CMF banner.

WHAT THE PHONE(4B) COULD BE

Nothing is not saying anything officially about specs or pricing. Rumoured specs include 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, with a price around 241.53 euros or $327.54. That aligns it with the budget segment in India and other emerging markets.

The sketch shows a single rear camera, a deliberate choice to cut costs. The transparent back is retained, which is the signature Nothing, that buyers clearly value. The Phone (4a) series has already proven that Nothing can sell a solid mid-range experience. The (4b) would push further down, directly competing with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy M series and the Redmi Note line.

Nothing also has two other products codenamed after Pokémon characters. Those could be other devices in the pipeline, but for now, the (4b) is the most concrete signal of what's coming next.

THE OVERALL STRATEGY

A budget variant lets Nothing capture the audience that wants the aesthetic but cannot justify spending flagship money. The CMF sub-label was supposed to fill that role, but the rising cost of memory and RAM made it impossible to hit the target price. Shifting those projects to the main Nothing brand and calling it the (4b) avoids the awkwardness of a CMF phone that costs as much as a proper Nothing phone.

The risk is that a budget Nothing phone might have to cut corners that erode the brand. A single camera, lower-resolution screen, and slower processor are the usual price of admission. Nothing has to decide which compromises are acceptable. If the phone looks right but performs poorly, it could hurt the halo effect. If the phone is a legitimately good value, it could be the volume driver. Nothing needs to grow beyond enthusiast circles.

The title and the 4B pencil are a direct hint. The company has been open about the CMF cancellation and about the fact that new phones are coming. The (4b) slots into that narrative perfectly.

For now, the device remains unconfirmed, but the evidence is piling up. A Flipkart microsite, a corporate teaser, a leaker's claim, and a clear gap in the lineup after the CMF project's death. The Nothing Phone (4b) looks like the cure for the price problem that Nothing created for itself.
