A massive battery upgrade may push the next iPhone to 240 grams and 9mm thick, according to a leaker.

iPhone 18 Pro Max could tie the 14 Pro Max as heaviest ever

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is shaping up to be a thick, heavy phone. According to leaker Ice Universe, it will measure about 9mm thick and weigh around 240 grams. That would tie the iPhone 14 Pro Max for the title of the heaviest iPhone ever, and it represents a 0.25mm increase in thickness and a 7-gram jump over the current iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The weight gain is driven largely by the battery, along with a new stainless steel vapour chamber for cooling. Regulatory filings show the iPhone 18 Pro Max will carry a 5,391mAh battery in China and a 5,567mAh battery in the U.S. Both are roughly 500mAh larger than the battery in the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

That kind of capacity increase is significant. Ice Universe summed it up in a post on Weibo: "The iPhone 18 Pro Max's 5500mAh battery comes at the cost of a 240-gram weight and a 9mm thick body."

WHERE THE WEIGHT COMES FROM

Apple has been playing with materials for years now. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro went with titanium, which made them lighter than their stainless-steel predecessors. Then the iPhone 17 Pro series switched to aluminium, which is even less dense, but internal changes and slightly thicker designs bumped weight back up.

Now the iPhone 18 Pro Max may reverse course again. Apple is reportedly using a new type of vapour chamber for thermal management that involves stainless steel, a denser material than what was used before. That adds grams on its own, on top of the larger battery.

The result is a phone that matches the 240-gram weight of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, a device that was widely considered a brick by modern standards. The iPhone 14 Pro Max was heavier than any subsequent Pro Max until now, and it looks like that record will stand or be tied.

WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER MODELS

There is no word yet on the dimensions and weight of the iPhone 18 Pro. Ice Universe's claim is specifically about the Pro Max. The smaller Pro might get a less dramatic battery increase, so the thickness and weight could stay closer to current levels. Apple is also expected to launch the iPhone Ultra, almost certainly a foldable, later this year. That phone will almost certainly be the heaviest of the new lineup because of the hinge and second display.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is positioned to launch this September alongside the smaller Pro, the first foldable iPhone, and possibly the UltrRumoursors are justrumourss until Apple confirms them, but Ice Universe has a track record on dimensions and batteries. If the numbers hold, Apple is making a clear choice: more battery life matters more than keeping the phone thin and light. For a vocal slice of the market, that is the right call. For everyone else, it is just another year of deciding whether the trade-off is worth it.
