INSTA360'S $770 LUNA TAKES ON DJI with 8K gimbal camera

Leica collaboration brings one-inch sensor and dual-lens system to pocket gimbal market, but the Osmo Pocket 4 isn't even sold in the USA.

Insta360 is crashing the gimbal camera party. The action cam specialist launched the Luna Ultra on June 10, a $770 pocket-sized gimbal camera built in partnership with Leica and positioned directly against DJI's Osmo Pocket lineup. The timing is deliberate: the Osmo Pocket 4 is not officially sold in the USA, leaving a gap in the market that Insta360 is explicitly filling.

said Max Richter, Insta360's founder and CEO, referencing the company's pivot from 360-degree cameras to conventional stabilized shooters.

The hardware tells the story. The primary lens is a Leica Summicron design paired with a one-inch 8K sensor, a substantial upgrade over the typical 1/1.7-inch sensors in this category. A secondary telephoto system with a 1/1.3-inch sensor and F2 aperture handles zoom work up to 12x and enables bokeh photography, something most pocket gimbals cannot do. Still images max out at 37 megapixels, and the panoramic mode captures 200-megapixel stitched images.

What's under the hood

Video capabilities are where the Luna Ultra makes its loudest claim. It records in 8K at 30fps with Dolby Vision HDR, a specification that outpaces the current Osmo Pocket 4's 4K max. The three-axis gimbal stabilization handles the mechanical side, while AI tracking keeps subjects framed automatically. A built-in wind guard reduces ambient noise in rough recording conditions, though anyone wanting a dedicated external microphone will need to buy one separately.

The two-inch OLED touchscreen is detachable and communicates with the camera from up to 66 feet away, giving vloggers and travel documentarians flexibility in framing shots without hovering over the device. Battery life runs four hours on the 1,550mAh cell, and internal storage holds 47GB. A microSD slot accepts cards up to 1TB for longer shoots.

The software layer

Insta360 built its editing ecosystem into the product workflow. The Insta360 app handles footage processing, and clips carry embedded timecode that syncs directly with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro. That timecode integration is a nod to hybrid shooters who treat pocket cameras as B-roll or documentary tools alongside larger cinema rigs.

Market math

At $770, the Luna Ultra costs a couple hundred dollars more than the base DJI Osmo Pocket 4. The problem for DJI is that the Pocket 4 cannot be purchased legally in the USA, a casualty of the ongoing export restrictions affecting DJI's consumer electronics. Insta360 is not shy about this: the product page positions the Luna Ultra as the logical alternative for American customers locked out of DJI's ecosystem.

The gimbal camera segment has been DJI's private lane for years. Insta360 arrives with a specs-first approach and a partnership badge that signals optical credibility. Whether Leica's involvement translates to meaningful image quality separation in real-world vlogging scenarios remains the open question, but the paper specifications are unambiguously aggressive.
