GOOGLE SLASHES AI PLUS COST TO $4.99, DOUBLES STORAGE

Google is cutting the price of its AI Plus subscription from $7.99 to $4.99 per month, the company confirmed this week, while simultaneously doubling the included cloud storage from 200GB to 400GB. The changes position Google AI Plus as the cheapest paid AI subscription from any major provider, undercutting OpenAI's ChatGPT Go plan by $3 per month.

The price reduction takes effect on the next billing cycle rather than immediately, meaning existing subscribers will see the lower charge when their plan renews. The storage increase will roll out over the next few days.

WHAT YOU ACTUALLY GET

AI Plus subscribers receive access to Gemini 3 Pro, Nano Banana Pro, and Deep Research, along with a 128,000-token context window that handles significantly longer documents than the free tier. The plan also includes the Daily Brief agent, which summarizes your upcoming day, and AI-powered email tools within Gmail.

The usage limits tell the story of where Google drew the line. Subscribers get double the query limits in the Gemini app compared to the free tier, with expanded access to NotebookLM, Proofread, and AI Inbox in Gmail. Additional access extends to Google Flow, AI Studio, and Antigravity. The limits are tighter than the higher-tier AI Pro plan, which is the trade-off for the lower price point.

WHY IS IT CHEAPER

The move is effectively a formal rebranding of Google's existing $9.99 per month 2TB storage tier as Google AI Plus. Previously, the 2TB plan included basic AI features, but the company is now explicitly leading with the AI branding and making the entry-level AI tier competitive on price with consumer-grade cloud storage alone.

This fits a pattern Google established at I/O last month, when it introduced a new $100 per month entry point for AI Ultra while simultaneously dropping the top-tier price from $250 to $200 per month. In April, Google upgraded AI Pro with 5TB of storage at no extra cost. The company is systematically moving every tier of its subscription stack to front-load the AI value proposition.

WHY NOW

The timing is not accidental. OpenAI's ChatGPT Go sits at $8 per month, and until this week, Google's entry-level AI offering was essentially competitive with it. At $4.99, Google is making a deliberate play for the price-sensitive subscriber who wants AI access without committing to the premium tier.

The competitive pressure is real. Anthropic, Microsoft, and OpenAI have all been iterating on pricing, and the market for paid AI subscriptions remains far below the installed base of paid cloud storage. By folding the 2TB storage tier into the AI Plus branding, Google is effectively telling existing Google One subscribers that the AI features are now included at a price point that was already competitive for storage alone.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR EXISTING SUBSCRIPTIONS

Anyone currently on the $7.99 AI Plus plan will see the price adjust at renewal. The storage bump should appear in Google One accounts within days. For the millions of users already paying $9.99 for 2TB of storage, the messaging is clear: you now have AI Plus, and the price has effectively dropped by half if you were considering the AI features as a separate purchase.

The one caveat is usage limits. AI Plus has stricter caps than AI Pro, so power users who were hitting boundaries on the free tier will find relief, but those who need heavy usage may still want to evaluate whether the extra $10 per month for AI Pro's 5TB and higher limits makes sense.

SCALE FOR ACQUISITION

Google shipped AI Plus in January 2026 at $7.99 with 200GB of storage. In eight months, the company has essentially halved the price while doubling the allocation. That trajectory suggests the pricing war for AI subscribers is accelerating faster than anyone expected, and the floor is not yet in sight.

For consumers, this is straightforward: the cheapest way to get a top-tier AI assistant with meaningful context limits and cloud storage is now a Google product. For competitors, it is a signal that Google is willing to use its scale in cloud storage to subsidize AI acquisition in a way that pure-play AI companies cannot match.
