OPENAI MERGES CODEX, LAUNCHES CHATGPT 5.6 IN BIGGEST WORK PUSH YET

OpenAI is consolidating its empire into a single desktop application. The company announced Thursday that it is merging Codex, its standalone AI coding tool, directly into the ChatGPT desktop app, creating what it calls ChatGPT Work. A new family of GPT-5.6 models powers the whole thing, and the company is simultaneously killing off Atlas, the AI browser it launched less than a year ago.

The moves are the clearest signal yet that OpenAI intends to be more than a chatbot company. ChatGPT already has nearly 1 billion users. With Work, OpenAI is going after the software that people spend their working day inside.

ChatGPT Work is effectively a desktop agent with Codex built in. It can modify local files, operate autonomously in a browser, execute multi-step tasks on a schedule, and draw on information from your apps through a plugin system. Tasks can be started on a smartphone and continued on the desktop, or vice versa.

The Work announcement includes an updated browser built into the desktop ChatGPT app and a cloud browser for work mode. A new Sites beta feature lets users create interactive web apps, live dashboards, and reports directly from ChatGPT. The company describes the agent as capable of operating across web, mobile, and desktop using information from your apps.

Codex leader Andrew Ambrosino called the merger "only the first" step. "We're working to unify the experience across web, mobile, and desktop—but we want to do it thoughtfully, not smash two things together with a toggle and call it a day."

The Work feature is the direct result of a plan The Wall Street Journal reported on in March: combining the ChatGPT app, Codex, and Atlas into a desktop superapp. Thursday's announcement confirms that plan is now live.

GPT-5.6 Sol is the flagship. OpenAI claims it outperforms prior frontier models while using fewer tokens at a lower estimated cost, achieving state-of-the-art results in coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and science. GPT-5.6 Terra is positioned as a balanced everyday work model. GPT-5.6 Luna is the cost-efficient tier.

The family is rolling out broadly today after a limited preview period. OpenAI says the models are better at coding and have improved design judgment, capable of creating tasteful, ergonomic, and functional interfaces from high-level direction. GPT-5.6 Sol powers ChatGPT Work.

The release comes amid fierce competition. OpenAI, which held an early lead in the industry, is fighting to stay at the forefront of AI capabilities against Anthropic, Google, Meta, SpaceXAI, and cheaper Chinese AI models. Meta also announced its first paid AI model on Thursday, ratcheting the pressure further.

ATLAS IS DEAD, OPENAI CALLS IT LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Atlas, the AI browser OpenAI launched in October, is being shut down with a deprecation date of August 9th. The product lasted less than a year.

The shutdown follows OpenAI's push to reduce what the company internally calls and catch up with Anthropic on productivity features. In recent months, OpenAI has also shut down the video generation app Sora and paused plans for a ChatGPT.

OpenAI's James Sun addressed the shutdown directly. "All these capabilities were built on what we learned from Atlas users who took a leap of faith on a new browser. You taught us how agents can help make browsing and doing work on the open web better, and we are applying these learnings to these new products."

The Atlas closure is a classic pivot pattern: launch a standalone experiment, learn what users actually want, kill the experiment, and absorb the lessons into the main product. ChatGPT Work's browser and autonomous web capabilities are Atlas's DNA repackaged inside the desktop app.

CODEX GREW UP FAST

OpenAI originally launched Codex as a software engineering tool aimed at professional developers. But the product outgrew its original market. In June, the company released a report showing that areas such as data analysis and research were growing faster than traditional coding use on Codex, and that 5 million people now use the tool each week.

Codex's expansion into a broader work tool made the standalone app redundant. Folding it into ChatGPT gives OpenAI a single distribution point for agentic work features, rather than maintaining two separate applications that increasingly did the same thing.

IS THIS ALL FOR THE IPO

OpenAI has filed confidential paperwork to go public, but CEO Sam Altman is not committing to a timeline. When asked by CNBC on Thursday whether the company would go public this year, Altman said, "I don't know."

The AI competition, government involvement, and research progress could all affect the timing. A public offering while the company is in the middle of a major product consolidation and model release cycle would be unusual but not unprecedented for a company of OpenAI's profile.

WILL IT BE THE AI WORK SOLUTION EVERYONE IS WAITING FOR?

The Work product is the strategic headline. OpenAI is betting that a single desktop app that does coding, browsing, file management, and autonomous task execution is stickier than a portfolio of specialised tools. That is the same bet Microsoft made with Copilot and that Anthropic is making with Claude Cowork, which ChatGPT Work notably resembles.

Two things matter from here. First, whether users actually trust ChatGPT Work with their local files and browser sessions. Agentic desktop tools have a trust problem: people are comfortable asking a chatbot for text but less comfortable letting it touch their files or submit forms. OpenAI will need to demonstrate reliability.

Second, whether the Atlas shutdown spooks developers who invested in its plugin ecosystem. OpenAI's pattern of killing experiments that don't scale is rational for the company but creates a credibility gap for future standalone products. The company is effectively telling developers: build on our platform, but expect everything to eventually fold into the main app.
