The 2013 pirate remake sailed past 2 million in its first day and keeps climbing, despite an $85 microtransaction wall at launch.

Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced has already sold 3 million copies in its first week, making it one of the fastest-selling titles in the franchise. Ubisoft announced the milestone and confirmed that a New Game Plus mode is in the works for a future update, with no timeframe given.

The remake of the 2013 pirate adventure launched in a month that most of the industry treats as dead ground, but that move is paying off. Within 24 hours it sold 2 million copies, and on Steam it became the most-played Assassin's Creed game ever, breaking the old concurrent record of 99,451 players. Ubisoft has also reported that the Steam version alone pulled in an extra $1 million from day-one DLC sales.

MICROTRANSACTION STORM BEFORE THE SALE WAVE

Not everything about the launch has been smooth. The game received sharp criticism from players over its microtransaction store, which at launch offered roughly $85 worth of additional items. The list included cosmetic ship skins, outfit sets, and resource packs, many of which were originally part of the game's 2013 season pass or could be unlocked through gameplay. Ubisoft responded by saying the microtransactions are entirely optional and that the standard edition of the game is the full experience.

The situation is a familiar one for Ubisoft, which has long straddled the line between respecting player time and pushing recurring revenue. The $85 figure, while attention-grabbing, is not unusual for a modern AAA remaster. It is the optics that sting. Players who paid full price for a re-release of a game they already owned were greeted by a shop that felt aggressive. The fact that the game is selling well anyway suggests either a tolerant fanbase or a hunger for naval combat that outweighs irritation.

PLANNED TREASURE HUNT GOES OFF COURSE

Ubisoft had organised a community treasure hunt event scheduled for July 17, where players would solve in-game clues to unlock a rare Explorer Outfit. The event never happened as intended. A single user accidentally obtained the outfit ahead of the event, likely through a game code or back-end glitch. Ubisoft had to derail the treasure hunt, and the outfit's exclusivity was compromised.

The incident is minor but emblematic of how even the best-laid post-launch plans can unravel when a live-service component meets a player base that digs through every patch note. The company has not said whether the treasure hunt will be rescheduled.

NEW GAME PLUS FEATURE

Beyond the microtransaction noise, Ubisoft has signalled that Black Flag Resynced is considered content-complete but that it will continue post-launch engagement with smaller quality-of-life updates. The upcoming New Game Plus mode is the centrepiece of that promise. It would let players carry over their upgrades, ship upgrades, and outfit unlocks into a fresh playthrough, which is a feature the 2013 original lacked and that fans have requested for years.

Ubisoft has not set a release date for New Game Plus, only that it is being developed. Given the sales momentum, there is little reason to rush. The game is already one of the strongest launches in the series, especially when compared to the most recent brand-new entry, Assassin's Creed Shadows, which recorded 1 million players on its opening day. Black Flag Resynced doubled that figure in sales alone in its first 24 hours, and the week-one total of 3 million towers over that benchmark.

WHAT THE NUMBERS SAY ABOUT THE FRANCHISE

The contrast between the remake and the latest instalment tells a story that Ubisoft executives should read carefully. Players are not tired of Assassin's Creed. They are tired of the direction the series took after Syndicate. Black Flag remains the high-water mark for many fans: a tight open world, strong sailing mechanics, and a protagonist who was a pirate first and an assassin second. The Resynced version preserves all of that, polishes the visuals to modern standards, and leaves the core loop alone. It is a safe bet that customers are rewarding that restraint.

The microtransaction backlash, the accidental treasure hunt leak, and the looming New Game Plus update will keep the conversation going for a while. But the headline number is the one that matters: 3 million people paid real money to sail the Caribbean again in the first week. That is a signal that the market for classic Assassin's Creed is far from saturated. If Ubisoft is looking for a template for future remakes or even a new entry that returns to the formula, the data is already in.
