REDDIT ENABLES VIDEO COMMENTS ACROSS PLATFORM

Reddit now lets users record or upload video replies in comments, expanding beyond text, images and GIFs in public SFW communities.

Reddit is introducing video comments, letting users record or upload short-form video replies in comment sections across its platform. The feature, announced Thursday, adds video to an existing mix of text, images and GIFs that redditors have been able to post for years.

The rollout comes with some constraints. Video comments are only available in public subreddits marked as safe-for-work (SFW) that have explicitly enabled the feature. Reddit says it will run all video comments through its safety systems before displaying them, a process that mirrors how it handles video posts elsewhere on the platform.

Users access the feature by clicking a video icon in the comment box, which opens options to record directly or upload a pre-existing clip. Videos do not autoplay and will respect users' audio settings "respect users' audio settings", meaning they will not blast sound unexpectedly.

The feature could be particularly useful for Ask Me Anything discussions, where hosts traditionally rely on text to answer questions from the crowd. Reddit tested the waters with a video AMA featuring Mel C. from the Spice Girls two months ago, conducted before the feature rolled out to all users.

Reddit's VP of product Maria Angelidou-Smith framed the launch as part of a broader push toward more expressive engagement. "We are continually evolving Reddit to deliver a more immersive and authentic human experience" she said. "The ability to reply with video gives users more creative ways to engage in communities they love" she added.

The requirement that videos be created by the user is notably absent from Reddit's announcement. Users can post video comments even if they did not record the footage themselves, a flexibility that could accelerate adoption but also raises questions about how Reddit will handle the inevitable wave of reposts and clips that drift into spam territory.

WHAT CHANGES FOR MODS

Subreddit moderators control whether video comments appear in their communities. The opt-in structure puts the decision in their hands, which means the feature will spread unevenly across the platform. Large default subreddits like r/funny or r/news may enable it quickly to keep pace with user expectations, while smaller communities focused on text-heavy discussion may leave it off indefinitely.

Moderators also inherit the task of reviewing video comments that slip through Reddit's automated safety systems. The company runs all video through its detection tools before display, but no automated system catches everything, and human moderators will bear the burden of flagging content that should not have made it through.

THE COMPETITIVE PICTURE

Reddit's move brings it closer to platforms where video is the primary format, but the implementation is deliberately narrower. Unlike TikTok or YouTube, where short-form video is the core experience, Reddit is folding video into an existing text-dominant interface. The SFW restriction keeps it out of the most controversial corners of the site, where NSFW communities have historically driven significant engagement.

The timing matters. Reddit is publicly traded now, and every feature launch gets scrutinized for how it moves user engagement metrics. Video comments give the platform a new way to keep users on the site longer, since watching a video takes more time than reading a text reply. Whether that translates to better retention or just more scrolling remains to be seen.
