Microsoft just put consumer versions of the Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 on sale, and the headline number is not the chip or the battery. It is the price. Both machines started at $999 in 2024. The new consumer models start at $1,499 for the Surface Pro 12 and $1,599 for the Surface Laptop 8. That is a $500 to $600 jump in a single generation.
The company blames the ongoing RAM crisis, and it is a real market force: memory prices have climbed sharply over the past year. But the sticker shock is unavoidable. These are now premium-tier devices even at the entry level, and the value proposition has shifted.
THE HEADLINE IS THE SNAPDRAGON X2 CHIP
Microsoft says the new devices offer 53% faster graphics performance and 15 to 20 hours of battery life. The Surface Pro 12 specifically claims 15.5 hours, while the smaller Surface Laptop claims 20. The chips are paired with at least 16GB of RAM in the Surface Pro starting config.
The designs are unchanged. Both machines still use 100% recycled aluminum shells. The Surface Laptop comes in the same two LCD sizes (13.8-inch and 15-inch), now with an additional Jade green color option alongside Platinum, Black, and Dune. The Surface Pro offers Platinum, Black, and Dune with a Flex keyboard that includes a haptic trackpad. Microsoft describes it as delivering "subtle haptic feedback across Windows and the apps you use every day.".
Other upgrades are more iterative. There is a new Surface Repair Tool that can "run tests on supported components (including the battery, display, or camera) and [walks] through guided repairs for eligible parts like the battery, display, touchpad or motherboard.". It runs diagnostics and walks owners through guided repairs for components like the battery, display, and touchpad. That is a notable step for repairability, even if it only covers a subset of possible failures.
PROMO MATH
To soften the price blow, Microsoft is running aggressive launch promotions. Order a Surface Pro 12 between now and June 30, and the Surface Pro keyboard is free. Preorder the Surface Laptop 8 and you get a free Surface Arc Mouse plus 50% off Microsoft Complete extended warranty.
Trade-in values can sweeten the deal further. Microsoft promises up to $900 savings when trading in an older Surface device. If you are on an older Surface, the trade-in combined with the free accessories might bring the effective cost close to what you would have paid for the 2024 model without promotions. But that math only works if you own an older device with solid resale value.
WHY THIS GENERATION HURTS
The 2024 models launched at $999 with decent specs and broad appeal. The new models, even with the chip upgrade, start $500 higher. The Snapdragon X2 Plus chip and additional storage account for some of the increase. The 2024 models already saw price increases in April 2025, and these new consumer models sit just above those.
AVAILABILITY
Both machines are available now. The Surface Laptop 8 starts at $1,599 in Platinum, Black, Dune, or the new Jade green. The Surface Pro 12 starts at $1,499 in Platinum, Black, or Dune, but remember: no keyboard or stylus in the box. The free keyboard promo runs through June 30, so anyone buying a Surface Pro should act before then.
The Surface Laptop's two sizes (13.8-inch and 15-inch) remain unchanged. The display is still LCD, not OLED, which at these prices feels like a missed opportunity. At $1,500-plus, many competitors offer OLED panels.
THE BOTTOM LINE
If you need a new Surface immediately, the promos make it a decent deal. If you do not, there is a strong argument for waiting. The 2024 models are still capable machines, and the main advantage of the new generation is the graphics uplift. The price premium is steep enough that the free accessories and trade-in are not a bonus; they are a requirement to make the price palatable.
Microsoft is betting that the Snapdragon X2 brand and the RAM crisis explanation will carry the day. Customers will decide whether the bet pays off with their wallets.
