T-Mobile is finally forcing the customers who refused to upgrade off the plans they have held for a decade or more. The carrier is retiring some of its oldest rate plans, some of which were built nearly 15 years ago during the 3G and 4G eras. Affected customers will be migrated to modern plans, and for most of them that means a price increase of around $4 per line. Some voice lines could see $6 per line more, watch and tablet lines $3 more, and 5G Home Internet lines an extra $6. Free lines appear to be spared, but the Kickback discount on ONE plans that gave $10 off for lines under 2GB is likely ending.

The company described the move as retiring plans built: "We’re retiring our oldest plans, some of which were built nearly 15 years ago – in the 3G and 4G eras, and well before our 5G network was fully deployed. Customers will transition to modern plans that provide access to America’s best wireless technology, enhanced features and a 5-year price guarantee for peace of mind. Some customers will see no change to their monthly bill, while some will see a modest adjustment. Every customer moved to a new plan will keep their current benefits while gaining improvements in network and service experiences." T-Mobile says customers will transition to modern plans that include a 5-year price guarantee on the monthly charge for talk, text, and 5G data.

Every customer moved to a new plan will keep their current benefits while gaining improvements in network and service experiences."

WHO GETS THE BOOT

The retirement hits Simple Choice and ONE plans, and could affect Magenta plans, along with T-Mobile for Business accounts on those older structures. These are plans that date back 10 to 15 years, before unlimited data was truly unlimited and before streaming video was a primary use case. The company's rationale is that a rate plan is a snapshot of the network's capacity at that time. Fifteen years ago mobile usage meant weather and stock reports; today people stream 4K movies.

But the customers who kept these plans did so for a reason. Simple Choice was known for its generous international roaming and data stash. ONE plans included the Kickback discount and the option for HD video with ONE Plus. Magenta plans added Netflix on Us. T-Mobile is promising that migrated customers keep their current benefits and gain improvements, but the price is going up for many.

THE REAL COST

The average adjustment is $4 per line, but the actual math depends on the line type. Voice lines could jump $6, watch and tablet lines $3, and 5G Home Internet lines $6. Free lines from previous promotions appear to be excluded from the increases. For a family with four voice lines on an old plan, that could mean $24 more per month. The loss of Kickback ($10 off per line under 2GB) effectively adds another $10 for any line that stays below that threshold. T-Mobile says the new plans include benefits like enhanced device offers, streaming services, improved international roaming, and travel perks, but not all of those will replace the value of a $10 discount on a line that barely uses data.

Customers have two weeks from the official notification to decide. The carrier is sending texts and in-app notifications via the T-Life app starting today (June 29, 2026). The changes take effect on the next bill cycle beginning in mid-July.

WHAT T-MOBILE SAID

Internally, COO Jon Freier sent an email to staff framing the retirement as a massive simplification. The move clears out over 1,100 legacy billing codes. That number gives you a sense of how tangled T-Mobile's billing system has become after years of promotions, free lines, and discounts stacked from the Sprint merger and before. Freier acknowledged that the immediate future will bring but said the simplification will make frontline jobs easier over time: "For our frontline teams... while the immediate future will bring increased customer contact volume, we are confident this plan simplification will make your job easier over time." So the carrier is bracing for angry calls.

THERE IS A PATTERN HERE

Carriers love to reward new customers with promotions while slowly squeezing the ones who never leave. T-Mobile had a history of grandfathering old plans, but that tolerance has a limit. The company now faces the reality of a 5G network that costs more to operate and the need to simplify a system that has over a thousand billing codes. This move is cynical in the way all carrier moves are cynical, but it is also rational from a business perspective.

Still, the timing stings. T-Mobile spent years building its reputation on no contracts, transparent pricing, and keeping your plan forever. That era is over. Now it is just another carrier raising prices on the people who trusted it most.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

Affected customers should check the T-Life app or their text messages. The two-week window is real. T-Mobile recommends moving to a new plan; if you do nothing, you will be moved automatically. Before that happens, compare the new plan's cost against what you actually use. If you have multiple free lines, verify they transfer. If you rely on Kickback, the new plan almost certainly doesn't have it. The 5-year price guarantee is a carrot, but remember that it only applies to the monthly charge for talk, text, and data, not to add-ons or device payments.

For customers who want to push back, T-Mobile's frontline teams are about to get very busy. Calling and asking for a retention offer might work, but the carrier has already disclosed the new pricing structure. Loyalty had a longer shelf life at T-Mobile than anywhere else. That shelf just expired.
