NOTEBOOKLM NOW GEMINI NOTEBOOK, ADDS CLOUD CODE EXECUTION

Google announced Thursday that the research and note-taking tool NotebookLM is now called the Gemini Notebook, and that it is being integrated into the company's broader Gemini AI suite. The name change is accompanied by an under-the-hood upgrade that gives each Notebook its own secure cloud computer, allowing the AI to write and execute code natively for data analysis and complex calculations.

The numbers show the tool had outgrown its experimental label. More than 30 million people and 600,000 organisations have used it since it launched as Project Tailwind at I/O 2023 and later became NotebookLM. The new name aligns with Google's push to make Gemini the single brand for its consumer AI products, but the tool itself remains a standalone application with its own identity.

The core concept is untouched. The Gemini Notebook is still a research assistant that analyses the sources the user feeds it. Upload a document about math and ask about dolphin biology, and it will tell you it does not have the answer based on the sources. That groundedness is what made the original so popular. It does not hallucinate from the open internet. It stays in its lane.

The service itself isn't changing either. Existing notebooks are unaffected, and the product continues as a standalone tool even as it gets deeper integration with the Gemini ecosystem. Users can already create notebooks directly from the Gemini App, and notebooks sync automatically with Google Drive.

What actually changed beyond its name: the underlying infrastructure underneath. As part of the rebranding, Google is rolling out a secure cloud computer for each Notebook, enabling the AI to write and execute code. This lets it analyse data, run models, and produce more sophisticated artefacts without relying on the user's local machine.

THE CLOUD COMPUTER UPGRADE

The cloud computer started rolling out last month, but availability widens starting Thursday. Right now it is available for Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. AI Pro users on the web will gain access in the coming weeks, and Google says it will expand to all Google AI Pro subscribers on the web over that period.

The upgrade is a genuine capability jump. Previously, the tool could summarise, ask questions, and generate audio overviews, but any analytical heavy lifting required the user to process data externally. Now the AI can write and execute Python code, crunch spreadsheet-level data, and output results in new formats, including.json and Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) files. That makes it a more direct competitor to tools like OpenAI's Code Interpreter, but with the added constraint of source-groundedness.

INTEGRATION WITHOUT LOSING IDENTITY

The Gemini Notebook now syncs natively with Google, allowing users to pull in documents without a separate upload step. Changes made on either platform sync automatically, and starting a research project in Gemini and continuing it in the Notebook are straightforward.

Google also confirmed that notebooks will soon arrive in AI Mode in Search, though no timeline was provided. That integration means users could surface their personal research notebooks directly from a search query, a feature that ties the product more closely to Google's core business.

Still, some functionality remains exclusive to the platform. Creating a video overview from a notebook, for example, requires the Gemini Notebook interface and cannot yet be done from the Gemini app or search. That exclusivity gives the tool a reason to exist beyond just branding.

IT SIMPLIFIES A LOT

NotebookLM was widely considered Google's best consumer AI product. It solved a real problem, stuck to its constraints, and avoided the hype-driven overpromising that plagued some of the company's other AI launches. Renaming it to Gemini Notebook is an admission that the product works best when it is clearly part of a family rather than a one-off experiment.

The rebranding also simplifies the lineup for users who were confused about the relationship between NotebookLM, Gemini, and Google's other AI tools. If every research and note-taking feature lives under Gemini, the mental model becomes simpler: Gemini is the assistant, Notebook is the research environment.

The cloud computer upgrade suggests Google is serious about keeping the tool competitive in the research space. The original NotebookLM was strong in summarisation and organisation but weak in computation. The upgrade closes that gap without sacrificing the groundedness that made it special. For the 30 million people who already use it, the name change is cosmetic.
